About this Structural Table#
This matrix crosses King Wen’s classical ordering with its English names, Pinyin, and Simplified Chinese, along with a brief descriptor of its essence, its internal Nuclear Hexagram, and its archetypal structural correspondence in the Earlier Heaven arrangement (先天八卦 - Xiān Tiān Bāguà, or 伏羲八卦 - Fú Xī Bāguà, the binary ordering according to Emperor Fu Xi).
📌 Navigation Note: The links on each hexagram number will direct you to my Spanish translation of Richard Wilhelm’s traditional text. Within each individual article, you will also find the link to the original German source text for academic reference.
On the Mapping of the Later Heaven Sequence to the Earlier Heaven Sequence#
Unlike a conventional, flat positional index, the Earlier Heaven column in this table represents the hexagram number in King Wen’s ordering that results from mapping each constituent trigram from its quadrant in the Later Heaven (Hou Tian) scheme to its directional equivalent in the Earlier Heaven (Xian Tian) arrangement.
Consequently, Hexagram 1 (pure Qián, located in the Northwest in the Hou Tian) geometrically projects itself onto Hexagram 52 (pure Gèn, also located in the Northwest in the Xian Tian).
