Water over the earth flows together wherever it can, just as all rivers naturally gather in the sea. This symbol illustrates the concept of holding together and its inherent laws. The same idea is suggested by the structure of the hexagram: all lines are yielding except for the single firm line in the fifth place, which occupies the ruler’s position. The yielding lines hold together because they are guided by the strong-willed leader who serves as their center of union. Yet this powerful, leading personality also maintains a bond with the others, finding in them a vital complement to his own nature.

The Judgment

Holding together brings good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; if so, there is no blame. Those who are uncertain gradually join. Whoever arrives too late meets with misfortune.

This hexagram concerns joining with others to complement and support one another through mutual solidarity. For such a union to endure, there must be a central point around which the others rally. Becoming the center of unity for people is a grave task carrying immense responsibility. It demands inner greatness, consistency, and strength. Therefore, anyone who wishes to gather others around themselves must first examine whether they are equal to the challenge. Attempting to unite people without a true inner calling causes more confusion than if no union had been formed at all.

Where a true rallying point exists, those who hesitate at first will gradually come forward on their own. Those who delay will suffer the consequences, because timing is vital when holding together. Relationships form and strengthen according to deep inner laws. Shared experiences cement them, and anyone who comes too late to share in these foundational moments will find the door closed.

On the other hand, someone who recognizes the need for union but lacks the inner strength to act as its center has a duty to join an existing organic community.¹

The Image

Water on the earth: the image of Holding Together. Thus the kings of antiquity granted the individual states as fiefs and maintained friendly relations with the feudal lords.

Water on the earth fills every crevice and clings tightly to the soil. The social organization of antiquity was founded on this very principle of solidarity between the ruler and his dependents. Water flows together naturally because all its parts are subject to the same laws. In the same way, human society must hold together through a community of shared interests that makes every individual feel like a member of a greater whole. The central power of any social organism must ensure that every member finds their true interest in holding together, just as it was in the paternal relationship between the high king and his feudal lords in ancient China.

The Individual Lines

Six at the beginning means:

Hold to him truly and faithfully: this is no blame. Truth like a full earthen bowl: Thus, in the end, good fortune comes from without.

When establishing relationships, absolute sincerity is the only proper foundation. This mindset is represented by a filled earthen bowl, where everything is substance and nothing is empty form. Such a disposition does not express itself in clever words, but through an inner power so potent that it naturally attracts good fortune from the outside.

Six in the second place means:

Hold to him inwardly. Perseverance brings good fortune.

When a person responds uprightly and perseveringly to a call from above requesting their cooperation, the resulting relationship remains primarily internal, allowing them to retain their autonomy. Conversely, anyone who desperately clings to others for social advancement fails to follow the path of the superior man. Instead of maintaining his dignity, he compromises himself.

Six in the third place means:

You hold together with people who are not the right ones.

We often find ourselves surrounded by people who do not belong to our own sphere. In these situations, we must not let habit betray us into a false familiarity. It goes without saying that this would lead to trouble. Maintaining courtesy without intimacy is the only correct approach toward such people; only by keeping our distance do we remain free for future relationships with our true peers.

Six in the fourth place means:

Hold to him outwardly as well. Perseverance brings good fortune.

Here, the relationship with the person who serves as the center of unity is already firmly established. In this position, one can and should openly show allegiance. It is simply a matter of remaining steadfast and refusing to be led astray.

Nine in the fifth place means:

#

Manifestation of holding together. In the royal hunt, the king allows beating from three sides only and relinquishes the game that turns away in front. The citizens need no warning. Good fortune!

During the royal driven hunts in ancient China, it was customary to herd the game from three sides only, leaving the fourth side open for the animals to escape. Those that did not turn away ran toward a gate where the king stood ready. Only the animals that entered this enclosure were taken; those that broke away in front were allowed to run free. This custom reflected the royal mindset: the king refused to turn the hunt into a slaughter, taking only the game that had, so to speak, voluntarily surrendered itself.

This line depicts a ruler or an influential leader who naturally attracts people. He welcomes those who come to him and allows those who choose otherwise to go their own way. He neither begs nor flatters; everyone comes of their own accord. This creates a voluntary allegiance among his followers. People do not need to constrain themselves artificially; they can express their true dispositions without fear. No restrictive measures or policing are required, as they are naturally devoted to their leader. This same freedom applies to life in general. We should never court the favor of others through sycophancy. If we cultivate the inner purity and strength necessary to become a focal point, the people destined to be with us will gather naturally.

Six at the top means:

He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune.

The head signifies the beginning. Without a proper beginning, there can be no proper end. If someone misses the opportunity to unite and continually hesitates, shrinking from wholehearted devotion, they will live to regret their mistake when it is too late.
